Reserve Field Conditions: The Decentralized City

The current drought facing Los Angeles makes it imperative to recognize the potential benefits of the LA River as part of an environmental infrastructure. This plan aims to improve environmental conditions and educate residents for the welfare of future generations.  The main goals for this project are to visually and functionally connect the site to the Los Angeles river, reduce the carbon footprint of the site by redistributing the built space, and providing a new infrastructural system to deal with storm water focusing on water collection and reuse.

Thr site is located between the Los Angeles river and the Santa Monica mountains and east and west between Colfax and Tujunga in Studio City, CA.  The most interesting features of this site are the commercial strip along Ventura Blvd. and the rapid elevation of the topography on the Santa Monica mountains.

The site was completely wiped clean and a new grid pattern was implemented by offsetting the line of the LA river and using it as a central point to radiate out from.  To connect with the LA river, the commercial strip along the north side of Ventura Blvd. was transferred and stacked on top of the south side strip of commercial buildings.  This leaves a large space open for public use along the river and halves the space taken up by commercial buildings while maintaining the same square footage allocated to commercial shops.  Then, all multifamily and single family housing was removed and redistributed into a new low density multifamily housing scheme across the entire residential zone of the site maintaining the same number of units.
